50th ANNIVERSARY

  2008

CASTLEDERG High School, formerly known as Castlederg Seconday School, reached an important milestone in 2008 when it celebrated its 50th anniversary, with several functions to mark the occasion. On Saturday, May 24 a service of thanksgiving was held.   school.jpg
During the service of thanksgiving to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school on Saturday, 24 May, 2008, the school was described as a 'school of excellence.' Mr. Robert Montgomery, chairman of the Board of Governors welcomed everyone present. Ryan McFarland, a former pupil, played Highland Cathedral and other well known items on the bagpipes. Rev. Roy Neill, who was minister of First Castlederg for more than 40 years and a member of the Board of Governors, opened proceedings with prayer.

Among the hymns which were sung was the 23rd Psalm, which had also been sung at the opening of the school 50 years ago. Chairman of the Western Education and Library Board, Rev. Robert Herron, brought greetings from the Chief Executive.

School principal, Mr. Desy Williamson, introduced the remembrance ceremony, and praised the contribution of former pupils to life in the community, the church and in business. He thanked the families of former pupils who were killed by terrorists during 'the Troubles' for agreeing to have their loved ones' names on a commemorative plaque which was dedicated by the Duke of Abercorn.

The Duke of Abercorn described the school as one of the best in the Western Area.  He said the plaque was a proud and fitting tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice.

Canon Walter Quill, formerly of Derg and Killeter parishes, said he remembered visiting the High School in 1959 with a Church Army unit. In those days there were only 12 teachers. Fifty years later there are 30 teachers, 10 classroom assistants and three clerical staff.

Mr. Williamson invited everyone present to have a look around the school and view a photographic display of memories from the various decades as well as viewing the magnificent playing facilities. Everyone present received a free pen and bookmark.

The Art Department unveiled a large ceramic wall produced by pupils of the school under the guidance of Diane McCormack.  The panel depicts the school and local surroundings and is on display in the entrance of the school.

Jim Emery, a former pupil had compiled a book depicting life within the school over the years, and it was sold during the day. CD’s of music, created and performed by pupils past and present, and DVD’s featuring vintage clips of past and present pupils and staff were also on sale.

Jordan Irwin, head boy,  presented a gift to Mr. Emery, and head girl, Leah Fyffe, presented a gift to the Duke of Abercorn.

After the ceremony everyone was invited to tea in the magnificent sports hall.  As part of the celebrations, there was a ladies hockey game and a gents football match on the new all weather pitches.
